One of the newest additions to downtown Hamburg is Mema’s Memories-Antiques & General Store located at 21 S. Third Street. Owner, Carolee Powell has created a unique treasure trove of goodies within one store that appeals to the tastes of many shoppers. Here, you will be able to find anything from antiques and collectibles to customized baskets.
Mema’s Memories-Antiques & General Store isn’t Carolee’s first experience owning and operating a business. She also owns PA Dutch Campground in Bernville along with the help of her son. For fifty years, Carolee and her husband would visit from New Jersey and spend their weekends at the campground. It was in 1985 when she and her husband purchased the campground and she has since had a hand in its success (although she is now “retired” from the campground). On Saturdays, they would hop in their truck and visit public sales, hoping to find exclusive items. During her years of camping in the area, Carolee fell in love with Hamburg and its small-town charm.
A majority of the items in Mema’s Memories are actually items that Carolee had in storage and owned. She realized it was time to downsize and rather than keep the items in storage, Carolee decided on selling the items. Carolee hopes that others feel the same joy she felt while owning the pieces.
When bringing Mema’s Memories to life, Carolee realized that antiques were not to everyone’s tastes, which is why there is also a general store component. In the general store section, you can find gourmet snack items, nostalgic candy, jams, jellies, soaps, candles, pet products, and much more. There are prepackaged gift baskets as well, but you can also customize gift baskets from the items in the general store.
The items Carolee curated for her store reflect her love of antiques aptly as you can tell there is a story behind each piece. Be sure to stop in for yourself to meet Carolee and see her large collection of antiques, collectibles, and vintage pieces.
